The Cáritas of the Andalusian dioceses assisted almost 100,000 people in 2025, of whom nearly 5,000 were homeless. This is reported in the action report presented at the 163rd Assembly of the Bishops of the South of Spain, held this Monday in Córdoba, according to the Archdiocese of Seville.
Precarity and housing
The president of Cáritas Regional de Andalucía, Francisco José Sánchez, presented to the assembly a year marked by job precarity, social exclusion and the housing access crisis, which has become the main factor in family impoverishment. The Cáritas strengthened coverage of basic needs such as food, utilities and school support, and intensified training and socio-labor insertion pathways alongside support for families, migrants and other vulnerable groups.
Faced with this situation, the Cáritas call on the authorities for more public housing, residential places and mental health care.
Young people and heritage
The assembly also addressed the second Pilgrimage and Meeting of Young People of the South of Spain, to be held from November 6 to 8 at the Santuario de la Virgen de la Cabeza, in Andújar (Jaén), which is observing a Jubilee Year for the 8th Centenary of its apparition. The bishops urge young people to take part and gain the jubilee.
In addition, the prelates were informed about the process of applying the recent Andalusian Cultural Heritage Law, approved by the Andalusian Parliament last March. Pending the development of the regulations, work is underway to analyze how it may affect the care of the heritage of the Andalusian dioceses.
Monasteries and schools
The bishops expressed their concern about the situation in Ceuta and addressed the reality of the contemplative life monasteries of the Andalusian dioceses, which they encouraged to pray and to help with their needs. The situation of the diocesan schools, centers promoted by the dioceses and in most cases organized through diocesan foundations, was also discussed.
The assembly, made up of the dioceses of Granada, Sevilla, Almería, Asidonia-Jerez, Cádiz y Ceuta, Córdoba, Guadix, Huelva, Jaén and Málaga, began with the celebration of the Eucharist.
