The parishes of Candelaria and Blanca Paloma, in the Tres Barrios area, have launched a project to assist homeless people. In a first phase, the premises attached to the Parroquia de la Candelaria will welcome around fifteen people on Tuesday afternoons, and work is already under way to extend that welcome to more days.

Showers, wardrobe and pantry

The premises have a shower area, wardrobe and pantry. According to the parishes, the assistance goes beyond providing hot water, food and clean clothes: comprehensive support is offered with the collaboration of a group of volunteer technicians, bearing in mind that the people being assisted may be burdened by several factors, including addictions, loneliness and a lack of reference points. The project is possible thanks to the parish's Cáritas and the involvement of the Hermandad de la Vera Cruz, whose board of governors accompanied the archbishop of Seville, José Ángel Saiz Meneses, on the visit in which he blessed the facilities.

Language workshops for immigrants

On the same visit, the archbishop also learned about the language workshops for immigrants that these parishes have been running for years, and spoke with their instructors and users. The parish priests responsible for the project are Francisco Ortiz and Manuel Sánchez. At the Parroquia de la Blanca Paloma a Eucharist was celebrated and, afterwards, the Ultreya of the Movimiento de Cursillos de Cristiandad, which the archbishop presided over in one of the halls of the church, with the participation of the president of the diocesan secretariat of this movement in Seville, José Ignacio del Rey.

How to take part

Anyone interested in collaborating with the project can contact the Parroquia de la Candelaria or the parish's Cáritas, which supports the initiative together with the Hermandad de la Vera Cruz.
