The Guillena City Council maintains surveillance and control measures for mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus (WNV) throughout the municipality, according to the municipal Health Area. The town was declared in an alert zone for four weeks and that alert ended on September 14, with no new circulation of the virus detected. The alert declaration came after the presence of the virus was confirmed on August 18 in Culex pipiens mosquitoes captured in a trap of the entomological surveillance system of the Diputación de Sevilla located in Guillena, less than 1.5 kilometres from the population centre. The decision was taken by the Directorate-General for Public Health and Pharmaceutical Organisation of the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Junta de Andalucía.

What is being done

During that period, the City Council's Health Area has stepped up the actions it had already been carrying out since spring. These include increasing the frequency of checks on possible larval breeding sites, searching for new breeding sites and refuges for adult mosquitoes, and reviewing and expanding vector control measures when necessary. Public information campaigns have also been reinforced to reach at-risk people, and communication has been established with health services for a more active search for human cases. The municipality remains at a high level, so the weekly surveillance, control and larvicide treatment sessions continue throughout the municipal area. As an exceptional measure, adulticide treatment has been applied on the banks of the rivera and the streams.

What residents can do

The Health Area recalls a series of individual prevention measures:
  • Avoid water pooling in ashtrays and any container.
  • Avoid water accumulation in drains and gutters and apply bleach.
  • Turn off lights in the home when not needed and use mosquito nets.
  • Keep pools and water tanks clean.
The actions are part of the 2026 Comprehensive Surveillance and Control Programme for West Nile Fever Vectors of the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Junta de Andalucía.
