The University of Seville and the Utrera City Council have signed a collaboration agreement to promote scientific, teaching and cultural activities on the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality. The agreement focuses on the study, conservation, digitisation and dissemination of that heritage.

The Synagogue, the focus of the work

Among the main lines of collaboration are research on the Synagogue of Utrera, the history of the municipality during the 19th century and the figures of Clemente and Enrique de la Cuadra. The agreement includes historical, archaeological, architectural, urban planning and documentary studies to better understand the evolution of Utrera and its heritage. According to the University of Seville, the Synagogue is one of the most outstanding elements of the municipality's historical heritage due to its link with the presence of the Jewish community in the town during the Middle Ages. Its study and recovery will allow deeper insight into that period of Utrera's history and help to conserve and disseminate its cultural legacy.

Technology and training

The agreement foresees the application of new technologies to the documentation and analysis of heritage. Possible actions include cataloguing, digitisation, photogrammetry and 3D scanning work, as well as the creation of databases, repositories and digital models. It also contemplates teaching and training activities, such as bachelor's and master's theses, doctoral theses, courses, seminars, conferences and lectures. In addition, there are scientific and informative publications, exhibitions, digital resources, audiovisual materials and cultural itineraries to bring that knowledge closer to the public. Within this framework, initiatives linked to the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the granting of the title of City to Utrera by King Alfonso XII are also foreseen, which will be marked on March 29, 2027.

The signing ceremony

During the signing, the rector of the University of Seville, Carmen Vargas, stressed the importance of researching the province's heritage, which she referred to as "a universe to discover" beyond the city of Seville. Vargas encouraged the mayor to promote internships for University students at local entities and companies in the municipality, as well as entrepreneurship and cultural initiatives. The mayor of Utrera and professor at the University of Seville, Francisco de Paula Jiménez, defended the need to enhance the value of the heritage of municipalities such as Utrera and thanked the University for its willingness to collaborate. According to him, it is the first agreement of this kind signed with this academic institution.
