The Open Classroom for Older Adults of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (UPO) in Tomares has started the 2026-2027 academic year with more than 150 people enrolled. Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 18 to 20 hours, at the Centro Cultural Tomás de Ybarra.

Four groups and varied subjects

The students are divided into four groups: first, second, third and fourth, the latter being a continuation group. Classes cover subjects such as Humanities, Art, Literature, History, Economics, Law, new technologies, science and health. Among the contents are the European Union, art history, Italian opera, the Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence, privacy in the digital age, nutrition and climate change. The programme is completed with trips, cultural visits and a memory workshop in which cognitive exercises and techniques are practised.

A programme for people over 50

The classroom is aimed at people over 50 and has been running in the town for 14 years, thanks to the collaboration agreement signed by the Tomares City Council and the UPO in October 2012. The opening event was held on Tuesday, October 20 in the Aula Magna of the Centro Cultural Tomás Ybarra. It featured the performance of the monologue «El último sol de la infancia», about Antonio Machado, by the retired actor Julio Moreno Ventas. The mayor, José María Soriano; the councillor for Culture, Magdalena Ybarra, and the academic director of the Open Classroom for Older Adults of the UPO, Manuela Domínguez Orta, were present.

Statements

The mayor, José María Soriano, has stated that the number of enrolments «reflects the enthusiasm of our older adults to keep learning and enjoying culture».
