The Lebrija City Council launches an awareness campaign about the negative effects of the abusive use of gambling, both in person and online. The initiative is part of the commemoration of No Gambling Day, which is celebrated on Thursday, October 29, and has the collaboration of the Virgen del Castillo Health Center. The campaign is aimed at the general population.
Why it is done
According to the World Health Organization, gambling addiction, known as pathological gambling, is a public health problem that can affect the social, economic, and family spheres and the mental health of those who suffer from it. It appears when the person loses control over this behavior and continues gambling despite the negative consequences.
The most recent data from the Ministry of Health, from February 2026, show an increase in the percentage of students between 14 and 18 years old with signs of problematic gambling. This situation affects boys more than girls and is more frequent among those who participate in online gambling. The City Council notes that the expansion of online gambling and the growing participation of adolescents make prevention increasingly important.
