What it is

Seville's Holy Week has more than seven centuries of history: it began in the Middle Ages and reached in the Baroque period the artistic and symbolic richness that sets it apart today. It is declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest and the City Council counts it among the city's Fiestas Mayores.

Dozens of brotherhoods carry more than a hundred pasos (processional floats) through the streets. Each one leaves its church and heads for the Cathedral, where it makes its station of penance, the central aim of every procession, after covering the stretch shared by all of them: the Official Route (Carrera Oficial), which begins at Plaza de la Campana.

Every year the General Council of Brotherhoods publishes the list of processions, with the order of passage, timetables and routes for each day.

Where

Each brotherhood leaves its church, in the centre or in the neighbourhoods, and heads into the centre to follow the Official Route, the shared stretch running from Plaza de la Campana to the Cathedral, where it makes its station of penance before returning to its church.

Get directions

In 2026 Tussam (city buses) reinforced its service from 29 March to 5 April, offering 20% more than in a normal week (80% more on Palm Sunday). The Metrocentro tram, with its terminus at the Archivo de Indias, ran non-stop through the night from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday, and several lines moved their terminus stops: those from Ponce de León moved to Puerta Osario in the afternoons.

Customs and traditions

The Madrugá, from midnight on Maundy Thursday to the morning of Good Friday, brings together some of the most fervent processions. The nazarenos wear robes and pointed hoods; in brotherhoods with capes they may interact with the public, while in the more austere ones with trains silence is kept.

The Christ pasos are usually accompanied by bugle and drum bands and the canopied Virgin pasos by brass bands. Saetas (flamenco prayers in song) are sung to the images from balconies, and many women wear a black mantilla on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Some processions last more than ten hours.
