Sanlúcar la Mayor will be the meeting point of the singular Nazarene brotherhoods of the Archdiocese of Seville on Saturday, November 14. The event is the V Congress of Singular Nazarene Brotherhoods, held at the Casa de la Cultura, in its Congress Hall, and at the church of San Pedro, as announced by the City Council. The day will begin at nine thirty in the morning with the reception of participants and the handing out of accreditations. Afterwards there will be an institutional welcome by the mayor, Raúl Castilla, and an address by Vicente Romero, president of the Congregation of Singular Nazarene Brotherhoods.

Talks and services

The opening talk, entitled «Alzad la mirada: tras las huellas de Jesús Nazareno, discípulos para la Misión», will be given by Monsignor José Ángel Saiz Meneses, archbishop of Seville. It will be followed by the lecture «La representación de Jesús Nazareno en el antiguo reino de Sevilla», by Andrés Luque Teruel, professor of Art History at the University of Seville. The journalist and crier Manuel María Pérez-Cano will then address «La Hermandad de los nazarenos de Sanlúcar la Mayor: historia, devoción y singularidades». After lunch, attendees will move to the church of San Pedro. There, before the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, the exercise of the Cinco Llagas will be held with the participation of the Cantate Domino choir. The venue of the VI Congress will also be proclaimed, there will be a closing ceremony and a besapiés. As a finale, the congress attendees will take part in the processional transfer of Jesús Nazareno from the church of San Pedro to its chapel, where a visit to the heritage exhibition of the Sanlúcar brotherhood is planned. The congress poster was presented on Thursday, November 5, at the Archbishopric of Seville. It shows two photographs from the mid-20th century of the Sanlúcar brotherhood. According to Manuel Jesús Reyes, elder brother of the Hermandad de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno de Sanlúcar la Mayor, host of the meeting, the lower image shows the reenactment of the Veronica that is still performed today in the town as part of the sermon ritual. Vicente Romero noted that this year the Hermandad de Jesús Nazareno de Morón de la Frontera and the Hermandad del Silencio de Sevilla are taking part for the first time. He also recalled that the contents of each congress are collected in proceedings published annually with the collaboration of the Diputación Provincial de Sevilla. Sanlúcar la Mayor takes over from Fuentes de Andalucía, which hosted the IV Congress last year. The Congregation brings together brotherhoods and confraternities whose titular is Jesús Nazareno carrying the cross on the way to Calvary and which preserve, to a greater or lesser extent, the ancient rites of the Sermón de Pasión during their stations of penance.
